Traditional Clothing in the Philippines

1. Barong Tagalog


Barong Tagalog, a Philippine national dress the official Filipino national costume, originated from the northern part of the Philippines, and is originally made of jusi or pineapple cloth called “pina” (woven from pineapple leaves).It is worn over a Chinese collarless shirt called camisa de Chino, a barong tagalog undershirt It exhibits the loose, long lines of its Chinese sources, the airy tropical appearance of Indo-Malay costume, the elongated effect of Hindu dressing, and the ornamental restraint of European men’s clothing. Today, barong tagalong for men and barong tagalog for women, come from different materials and different colors. It is usually used for formal occasion such as wedding, political event, meeting and wear by Philippine politician and famous celebrities.

2. Mestiza Dress


The Mestiza Dress is a filipiniana dress of expensive lace and fabric adorned with embroideries.

It is the sophisticated version of the Philippines national costume for women, the baro’t saya (blouse and skirt).

Made more popular by former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos, some even called it Imelda dress or terno.

Mestiza dress is known for its elegance and butterfly sleeves.

It is usually worn for formal occasions.

3. Maria Clara Dress


Maria Clara dress was named after a mestiza heroine of one of the novels of the Philippine National hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

Its origin was the Philippine national costume for female which is baro’t (shirt) saya (skirt).

The Maria Clara gown features a floor-length paneled skirt of silk or satin

and it consists of four separate pieces:

The collarless waist-length, bell sleeved camisa, the bubble-shaped, floor-length saya, the stiff,

neck-covering pañuelo; and the hip-hugging, knee length tapis, or overskirt.

4. Kimona Dress


This dress originated from the Visayas, can be worn for everyday activities as casual dress or for formal occasion.

Its origin was the baro’t (shirt) saya (skirt), the national costume of philippines for female during the early years.

5. Baro’t Saya


This is the traditional clothing of the Filipino, one of the unique feminine and simply beautiful national costumes in Asia. This dress can be seen only in the Philippines. The baro’t saya is considered to be a “filipiniana” – product of Filipino culture.

6. Terno


The Filipino terno alludes to the matching of blouse and skirt, joined at the waist to form a one-piece creation, with both bodice and skirt made of the same material.

7. Patadyong dress


Like the malong, the patadyong has a variety of uses. Primarily, women used it as a tucked-in skirt, topped by a kimona (thin cotton blouse). Women in the countryside or rural areas wear the patadyong as a sort of kerchief, shawl, or even to shade or cover themselves from prying eyes.
